Heartbroken

OVERVIEW:

Long after anyone expected Kate to do anything with her life, she did. Using the journals left behind by her aunt and grandmother, she wrote a novel based on a very real generation-old love story that ended in tragedy. On the other side of town, Emily is about to set fire to her life. She’s in a dead-end job and is involved with the wrong man; she can feel herself being drawn into darkness, with horrific consequences. With nowhere to go, she finds herself on the run.  Without knowing each other, and with lives that couldn't be more different, Kate and Emily head to the same point on the map: Heart Island, an idyllic place in the middle of a lake in the Adirondacks, owned for generations by Birdie Burke's family. The harsh and unyielding Birdie is at one with this island, which has a terrifying history all its own. She, too, has consequences to face.

Heartbroken is a tense, mesmerizing novel about the limits of dysfunctional families, of an island haunted by dark memories and restless ghosts, and of the all-too-real demons we must battle.  Wonderfully suspenseful, exquisitely crafted, and written with raw, emotional power, this is Lisa Unger at her very best.

REVIEW:

This book is not a thriller at all! You might read in the summary that there is a restless ghost in the island, well i'm telling you its not a ghost story. So yeah, its actually DRAMA as in like family drama, love life drama, mid crisis drama and more drama..

Here's the story.. First we have Birdie Burke, she is the main matriarch character in the book and she owns the "Heart Island" its where all the action took place and where she sees the "ghost". Birdie is a character that is so bitter and she is very negative. She is married and even her husband cant stand her, and also his son Theo. Then there's Kate, she is Birdie's daughter who have 2 children named Chelsea and Brandon, she also have a husband name Sean who adore's her. Every summer they go to Heart Island for a Family vacation, but that year only Kate and her Daughter Chelsea and her daughter's best friend Lulu went to the Island. Kate's relationship with her mother is not really picture perfect, Birdie thinks that Kate could have done better in her life and that her first failed marriage is something to be ashamed of and so on..

Then there's Emily she is a waitress at the blue hen, she is in a very toxic relationship with Dean. He is a big jerk and an ill tempered guy and oh wait! he's also a robber. Emily's life spiraled downward when he met Dean, her relationship with her mother was affected because her mother doesn't like Dean, she dropped out of college, she is in debt, and she got involved in a very big trouble that would lead her to Heart Island..

See my point?? Drama right.. So in summary there's mother daughter relationship, poor choices in life, secrets from the past, teenage daughter drama, marriage problems, bad boys.. And GHOST! Lol :)
I think that the story was ok, if you're into drama. The first part of the book was slow and I was just waiting and waiting for the plot to kick in.. I liked the twist in the story where all the characters became connected because of  Heart island. Then the ending was ok.. you may like this book. Its a good read but the book didn't grow on me.. its just not for me unfortunately..
